Shaler’s Cameron Szazynski became the first Titan tennis player in decades to qualify for the WPIAL singles championships after advancing twice at today’s sectional tournament.
Szazynski entered the 16-player Class AAA, Section 3 tournament as the No. 7 seed, but the star senior outlasted and outplayed players who were seeded higher to claim a Top-4 finish and spot in the league bracket.
In the first round, Szazynski battled past No. 10 seeded Ian Kuchera of Allderdice in a 10-5 win. He then overpowered No. 2 seeded Cooper Friday of Fox Chapel 10-7 in the second round. His victory over Fox Chapel’s top player and the No. 2 overall seed sent ripples through the sectional tournament, which traditionally ends with players from Fox Chapel among the victors.
Szazynski’s sectional run ended in the semifinals with a 2-6, 1-6 loss to No. 3 seeded Adeel Piracha of Shady Side Academy. He will now face No. 4 seeded Deniz Finkel of Allderdice to determine the third-place finisher in a qualifying match that will be played tomorrow.
Piracha will battle his Shady Side Academy teammate Colin Gramley, the tournament’s top seed, to determine who will be crowned the Class AAA, Section 3 Champion.
