Titans News · Winter Sports Start Delayed

November 19, 2020

Dear Shaler Area Athletes and Families,
Within the last 24 hours, the Shaler Area School District has released information to all district families reporting the rise in community transmission rates of COVID-19 within the community and county and announcing the transition to 100% virtual instruction next week. Additionally, Allegheny County issued a stay-at-home advisory, and the Pennsylvania Department of Health released an updated mandate on mask requirements that not only references general use but also use during athletic activities. Given all of this, and out of an abundance of caution, the Shaler Area School District will be postponing the start of winter athletics until Dec. 1. This will give the district the opportunity to request clarity on the mandate for mask use during athletic activity and to make any adjustments to our Athletic Health and Safety Plan. At this time, this is only a temporary pause in the start of PIAA winter sports at Shaler Area with intention of resuming at the beginning of December.

The virtual Parent/Student Winter Sports Meeting originally rescheduled for tonight, November 19, has been rescheduled for November 30 at 7:00 PM.  The link for the meeting will be available on the athletic website closer to Nov. 30.  The district understands the importance of extracurricular activities to the overall development of the student and will make every effort in the next 10 days to get clarity on the situation and begin the winter season on December 1.

Sincerely,
